Education Help for Low-Income Moms Struggling to Make Ends Meet? Santorum Votes to Reduce Access to Higher Education

Santorum's Words
“I am all for providing women on welfare with basic training so that they can take entry-level jobs, but beyond that I believe that they should provide for their education under the same circumstances as everyone else – through a combination of financial aid, loans, savings, hard work, and sacrifice.”
It Takes a Family – pg. 137-138

Santorum's Actions
And just what has Santorum done to break down financial barriers to higher education? In December 2005, Santorum was the decisive vote in cutting the federal student loan program (Roll Call Vote #363, S.1932, 12/21/2005, passed 50-50 with the Vice President casting the tie-breaking vote in favor). This vote in effect forces students to pay an average of $1,954 more for college loans. The $12.7 billion cut he voted for is the largest in the history of the program.
